Count the objects, not just the bags
Make a list of boxes, desk parts, chair, bedding and appliances. Note the longest item before you dismantle furniture. Keep screws in a labelled bag attached to the matching part. The 9 m² and 18 m² footprints are options to discuss, not student-specific locker sizes. A small inventory still needs a real layout and a quote; the calculator does not create a smaller unit that the facility does not offer.
Plan around your actual move-out dates
Your residence checkout date, transport availability and new accommodation date may be different. Ask about access on both ends of the stay and the billing rules for a partial month. Build a return-day list so you do not retrieve everything before your new room is ready. Store valuable personal documents separately from the bulk load.
Shared storage needs a written inventory
If friends want to share a unit, first confirm whether the agreement permits it and who will be the contracting tenant. Give each person a box prefix and agree who pays, who may collect, what happens if someone returns early and how damage concerns are handled. Equal division is only one way to allocate costs; different-sized loads may need a different agreement.
An original idea: the first-night box
Pack a small collection of items needed immediately when term resumes, such as clean bedding and study essentials. Mark it distinctly and place it in the agreed accessible area. Pair the inventory with a photograph so a friend collecting with permission can recognise it. Keep anything you may need over the break outside the stored load.
Make the comparison honest
A low monthly rent can be outweighed by two transport trips. A refundable deposit can affect your available cash even though it is not a final expense. Put these questions next to the budget rather than hiding them. Short holiday storage does not meet the move-in offer’s requirement of more than six months. No university partnership, student discount or campus shuttle is promised.
WORKED EXAMPLE · ILLUSTRATIVE INPUTS
Student storage vs transport-home planner
For an illustrative two-month stay, R700 monthly rent, R450 transport each way, R200 packaging and no extra fees, the storage option totals R2,500. If transporting and keeping the goods elsewhere would cost R2,800, this scenario is R300 lower. Shared equally by two people, it is R1,250 each. These are example inputs, not our rates.
Before you book
- Confirm move-out and return dates before booking transport.
- Get written billed-month, deposit and notice details.
- Label individual ownership if sharing is approved.
- Keep essential documents and valuables needed during the break with you.
Arrange a site discussion with your measurements. Rental quotations exclude VAT; ask for the payable total. Availability, intended use and fit-out are subject to agreed terms.
Questions about student storage
Is there a student discount?
No discount is assumed. Request the current price and ask whether any offer applies to your actual stay.
Can several students share?
Ask the team about the contract and access arrangements first. The per-person calculator only divides an estimated cost; it does not approve sharing.
Does the budget include a refundable deposit?
No. Add the quoted deposit to your cash required and keep it separate from non-refundable expense. Its refund conditions must be checked.
Can I store during study abroad?
Discuss the duration, authorised access, payment arrangements and return-date uncertainty. A long stay may have different terms from a holiday booking.
Travelling via Lanseria?
Plan storage access and the onward airport journey separately. The approximate route screenshot shows 31 minutes and 38.1 km via the N14; it is an approximate snapshot, not live traffic.
